The presidency has refuted claims that the country was snubbed in the recent United Nations Human Rights Council elections. The clarification comes in response to circulating reports suggesting Nigeria’s exclusion from the council. According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, “contrary to information circulating, Nigeria was not snubbed in this election, as some reports have falsely claimed.” He emphasised that “the country did not stand as a candidate for this cycle of elections.” Onanuga explained that on October 9, 2024, the UN General Assembly elected 18 members to the Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term.
