Crisis Brews In Reps Over $15m Executive Largesse

Members of the House of Representatives are poised for a showdown with Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila over allegations of unfair distribution of $15million largesse from the executive arm of government. The aggrieved lawmakers specifically alleged that Gbajabiamila had an underhand deal with the executive on behalf of the House to pass the N22.7trn Ways and Means borrowing from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) but ended up short-changing his colleagues in sharing the $15million made available to the House to sweeten the deal. The brewing crisis, it was learned, had forced Gbajabiamila to postpone resumption of plenary which was already slated for Tuesday so as to buy more time and pacify the aggrieved members. The speaker adjourned the plenary under the guise that the earlier date was announced in error. The clerk of the House, Yahaya Danzaria, in a terse statement on Monday said, “This is to inform all Hon Members and the general public that the House of Representatives will not resume pl...

Former Niger Delta minister, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Senator Barau Jibrin who is and about 38n other Senators-elect on Tuesday held a consultative meeting national working committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The meeting, it was gathered, is to perfect strategies to ensure Akpabio and Jibrin who have been endorsed by the party leadership emerge the next Senate president and deputy Senate president respectively. At the meeting, national chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Adamu, cautioned Akpabio and his supporters not to be late on the day of inauguration. The chairman was apparently to guard against the 2015 scenario when Senate President Ahmad Lawan, the then preferred candidate of the party for Senate president, and his supporters came late to the chambers, creating room for the emergence of Bukola Saraki against party’s wish. In response to the protests over the endorsement of candidates for the presiding officers of 10th National Assembly, Adamu said the N...

10th NASS: We are not ingrates - Ohanaeze tells APC to ignore Orji Uzor Kalu

The Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has again waded into the controversy over the zoning of principal positions of the National Assembly. The group’s reaction was over the protest by Abia Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu. It could be recalled that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) zoned the position of Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives to Rep Ben Kalu from the same Abia State. But Senator Kalu, a former governor of the State, who is angling to become the next Senate President, is insisting that the South-East deserves more than Reps Deputy Speaker.  Reacting to the developments, the Ohanaeze Youths in a statement by its National President, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike urged Senator Kalu not to jeopardise the interest of the South-East by hiding under faceless groups to issue self-serving statements.  He claimed in the statement that several faceless groups had been set up “to destroy what is coming to the South-East. Their game plan ...

A South East youth-based organisation, Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has rejected the micro-zoning of the position of deputy speaker of the House of Representatives to the South East. The All Progressives Congress (APC) recently announced that the position had been micro-zoned to the zone and that Abia State member-elect, Hon Benjamin Kalu, has been pencilled down for the position. Reacting to the development, COSEYL, in a press release signed by the president-general and publicity secretary, Hon Goodluck Ibem and Comrade Okey Nwaoru, respectively, stressed that it was insulting to zone such a position to the South East. The group also submitted that Kalu still has his victory being contested and cannot represent the Igbo nation. According to them, while the political goal and aspiration of Ndigbo are beyond the post of the Senate President, “we cannot identify with   Benjamin Kalu, not to talk of endorsing him to represent the political interest of the...

NASS Leadership: Anxiety Heightens As APC Govs Meet Today

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will today deliberate on the tussle for the National Assembly leadership. The meeting comes against the backdrop of heightened lobby of some governors to insist on the retention of the zoning arrangement earlier made by the party. The Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who doubles as the chairman of the Southern Governors Forum had faulted the zoning arrangement of APC National Working Committee (NWC), describing it as unworkable, skewed and reinforcing injustice and enhancing inequity. APC had zoned the Senate President position (South South, Godswill Akpabio), Deputy Senate President (North West, Senator Jibrin Barau); Speaker (North West, Hon Tajudeen Abbas); Deputy Speaker (South East, Benjamin Kalu). Even though the APC national chairman Abdullahi Adamu hinted last week that the zoning arrangement would be revisited, after a series of protests by aggrieved aspirants, some party stakeholders have ins...
