NLC Threatens Mass Protest Over Planned Electricity Tariff Hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to abandon its plans to increase electricity tariffs, warning that it will lead a mass resistance against such a move. This stance was made clear in a communique issued after the NLC's National Executive Council meeting in Yola, Adamawa State.

The NLC rejected the proposed reclassification of electricity consumers by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which would force consumers from lower bands to Band A. The labour union described this move as a "sham" aimed at imposing "unjustified extortion" on the masses.

In addition to its opposition to the electricity tariff hike, the NLC also threatened to shut down operations of telecommunications companies if they fail to implement the agreed-upon 35% tariff hike, rather than the 50% increase earlier approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

This development comes after the NLC had planned to mobilize for a protest on February 4, 2025, over the telecom tariff hike, but later suspended the action after a meeting with the federal government.
