Ejiofor Hails Ozekhome's Elevation to Life Bencher, Celebrating a Legacy of Justice, Advocacy

In a prestigious ceremony held at the Body of Benchers' headquarters in Abuja, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, alongside 14 distinguished legal practitioners, was conferred the rank of Life Bencher, the highest accolade in the legal profession. The event was presided over by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, who currently chairs the Body of Benchers.

Ozekhome expressed profound gratitude to the Body of Benchers and its chairman for this significant recognition. He committed to contributing to the purification of the legal profession, emphasizing his dedication to amplifying the voices of marginalized Nigerians.

The ceremony welcomed a host of distinguished guests, including former Chief Justice of Nigeria Hon. Justice Alfa Belgore, former President of the Court of Appeal Hon. Justice Umaru Abdullahi, and other leading lights in the legal field such as Mrs. Gloria Umoren, SAN, and Chief Solomon Umoh, SAN. The gathering also featured the presence of former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, along with several esteemed Life Benchers and Benchers.

Renowned human rights lawyer Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor took the opportunity to celebrate Ozekhome’s monumental achievement. "To the glory of God Almighty and in recognition of an illustrious career dedicated to the advancement of justice, legal scholarship, and the rule of law, we celebrate the remarkable elevation of my esteemed mentor, the distinguished Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, CON, OFR, FCIArb, LL.D, to the prestigious rank of Life Bencher," Ejiofor stated.

He emphasized that this honor is a testament to Ozekhome’s steadfast commitment to the legal profession, his brilliance as a legal luminary, and tireless advocacy for justice and human rights. "Prof. Ozekhome exemplifies the finest qualities of the Bar — integrity, scholarship, and an unyielding dedication to the defense of the oppressed," he added.

Ejiofor noted that Ozekhome’s elevation places him among the revered ranks of esteemed jurists and legal icons whose insights and contributions continue to influence the future of the legal profession. He expressed hope that Ozekhome's legacy of excellence and mentorship will inspire many generations of lawyers.
