Escape of suspects: Ohanaeze youths fume, urge IGP to take over Anambra murder case

The youth wing of apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has described as unacceptable the escape of arrested suspects involved in the murder of Anambra lawmaker, Hon. Justice Azuka.

It could be recalled that the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the escape of two of the kidnapping, cum murder suspects.

However, in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike described the explanation from the Anambra police as "hogwash, embarrassing and unacceptable."

Okwu said it was unthinkable that such calibre suspects could escape from custody, stressed that the police must come clean on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"We are alarmed with the reported escape of two suspects involved in the murder of Anambra lawmaker, Hon. Justice Azuka.

"This development reinforces fears in some quarters that there could be some high profile persons involved in the murder. One would wonder why kidnappers will kill a victim after collecting N100m ransom. There is more to it than meets the eyes.

"Having said this, we urge that the Inspector General of Police should take over the investigation of the case. The remaining suspects and the case file should be taken over by the IGP's office.

"When this is done, the IGP should widen the scope of the investigation beyond kidnapping. A case of assassination should also be thoroughly investigated, and there should be no limit to the investigation.

"This is the only way to save the force from this national shame and caricature," he stated.

Meanwhile, the Ohanaeze youths also demanded immediate arrest of all the officers involved in the escape of the suspects.

"That's the only way to unravel the truth and not the hogwash put forward to the media by the police command," Okwu further stated.
