UNIZIK CRISIS:Dr Ojiakor sends Petition to the Senate

A senior lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Dr. Chukwudi Ojiakor, has petitioned the Senate, alleging gross violation of the process for the appointment of Vice Chancellor (VC) and imposition of an unqualified person as VC.

According to Dr. Ojiakor, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe, single-handedly directed the placement of advertorials for the vacant position of VC and Registrar without the convocation of full council membership.

The advertorial, published in Vanguard newspapers on September 12, 2024, contained discriminatory items and excluded a significant section of the university, violating the guidelines set out in the University Miscellaneous Act of 1993 amended in 2003.

Dr. Ojiakor alleged that despite efforts by stakeholders, including the former Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sununu, Amb. Mbadiwe announced Dr. Benard Odoh as the new VC in a "dictatorial and scandalous manner."

The petition also accused Dr. Odoh of forgery, perjury, and impersonation, citing his August pay slip, which showed he was paid as a reader, not a professor.

Additionally, the University's central information reference and management system (CIRMS) listed Dr. Odoh as a reader, and the University he claimed made him a professor, Federal University Gusau, debunked his claims.

Dr. Ojiakor prayed that Amb. Mbadiwe be removed as Chairman of the Governing Council, that the Federal Ministry of Education reconstitute another Governing Council, and that Dr. Odoh be recommended to the ICPC for alleged forgery and impersonation. This plea has been aceded to as the President,Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given a directive for their removal and as such any one of them still carrying himself or herself in like manner is an impostor.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dissolved the Governing Council of UNIZIK and dismissed key officials, including Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, the Vice Chancellor, and Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, the Registrar. This at the moment lays to rest the issue at the moment.
