The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) on Thursday 14th November, marked the 2024 World Savings Day with the theme" Act of Humanity" where the Corporation trained students on how to save for future benefits.
The Corporation commemorated the World Savings day with students from different public secondary schools in Imo state at Girls Secondary School Akwakuma where students were taught on the benefits and significance of saving.
In her paper presentation, NDIC Owerri Zonal Controller, Mr Sampson Hamilton who was represented by Mrs Martina Don- Anyanwu, Senior Manager, NDIC Owerri Zonal Office, admonished students to imbibe the culture of saving which according to her will help them to overcome many challenges as they grow up, such as paying accommodation, taking care of loved ones and gaining financial independence.
She urged them to eschew the habit of reckless spending from their savings unless when necessary. "open accounts with financial institutions, adding, “ As students, you should build the habit of saving especially in lincenced financial institutions for safe keeping and to earn interest on your money. This reduces the risk of spending, theft, and gives your money the chance to grow.”
She further admonished the students to avoid expensive items, live within their means and focus on their needs instead of wants.
In her presentation, Mrs Chinenye Chimezie-Amadi, Manager, Communications and Public Affairs Department, NDIC took the students on the mandate and statutory roles of NDIC.
She said NDIC's primary mandate is to protect depositors' and also guarantee the payment of deposits up to the maximum limit in the case of bank failure.
According to her " NDIC works to contribute to the stability of the Nigerian financial system. This includes supervising insured institutions to ensure they are safe and sound, and to reduce the risk of failure"
"NDIC is also responsible for resolving failed banks in an orderly manner. This involves liquidating the failed institution to minimize disruption to the banking system, and to settle claims to depositors, creditors, and shareholders"
In her remarks, the Executive Secretary of Secondary Education Management Board, Dame Augustina Anyanwu expressed confidence on the NDIC training for students and urged students to take advantage of the seminar to expand their knowledge on the benefits and importance of saving. She encouraged students to extend the knowledge acquired from the seminar to their parents and encourage them to imbibe the habit of saving and judicious spending.
Some of the students who spoke to the press expressed their happiness for the training and commended NDIC for impacting the knowledge of saving and judicious spending in them . Goodness Mmesoma Okeke, Senior prefect of Akwakuma Girls Secondary School and Peter Hosanna , Junior perfect Development Comprehensive Secondary Owerri promised to take advantage of the seminar to build a brighter future.
There was a question and answer session. Highlight of the event was a presentation of NDIC publications to the host school, Girls Secondary School, Akwakuma and a group photograph with teachers from all the 24 schools present at the event.
