In a startling turn of events, false claims have emerged suggesting that the Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has called on President Bola Tinubu to dissolve the Greg Mbadiwe governing council. These allegations have been categorically denounced by university officials and stakeholders, who assert that no such meeting or decision ever took place.
Sources close to the university administration have revealed that these baseless claims are nothing more than a desperate ploy by a small group of disgruntled individuals seeking to hold the governing council and the entire university community to ransom. Their motives, while unclear, appear to be rooted in personal grievances rather than the best interests of the institution.
In a significant development that further undermines these false allegations, it has come to light that six Senate members have formally consented in writing to the Pro Chancellor, agreeing to participate in the ongoing recruitment process for key positions within the university. This decisive action effectively puts an end to the misguided efforts of certain parties who sought to manipulate the university Senate for their own agenda of destabilizing the institution.
It is also sad that such level of desperation exhibited by these individuals has reached alarming proportions. Reports indicate that they have been actively sponsoring protests and allocating substantial financial resources in a bid to derail the transition process for appointing a substantive Vice Chancellor.
Their tactics have included attempts to illegally extend the tenure of the Acting Vice Chancellor, despite clear stipulations in the appointment letter limiting the term to a maximum of six months and a substantive court ruling gotten by the industrial court which was seen by our reporter.
University insiders have expressed grave concerns over the potential consequences of these actions, raising questions on the purported call for the governing council's dissolution at a time when the same presidency had just appointed
the Pro Chancellor as a member of the 2009 Federal Government Re-negotiation Committee with university-based staff in recognition of his handling and aversion of the leadership crisis upon his arrival. They are also worried that such actions could undermine the integrity of the institution and disrupt its academic and administrative functions since the governing council, led by Greg Mbadiwe has demonstrated that its commitment to upholding the university's standards and ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.
