Edo 2024 Gubernatorial Election: IPC Urges Journalists to Prioritize Safety

With the Edo State gubernatorial poll just around the corner, scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024, the International Press Centre (IPC) is sounding the alarm for journalists and media professionals to be vigilant about their safety. The IPC's Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, emphasized that journalists covering the election must be aware of the risks and take necessary precautions to avoid danger.


He advocated Safety Tips for Journalists which include the following, Be Non-Partisan: He asked them to Maintain impartiality in reporting, as well as to stay accompanied by others and avoid walking or moving alone

He tasked accredited to Obtain INEC and organizational identity cards, to avoid being harrashed. He as well asked them to handle classified Info with Care and also protect sensitive information


Arogundade stressed that security agencies and other stakeholders must also conduct themselves professionally to ensure journalists' safety. He appealed to the Inspector General of Police to instruct officers to safeguard accredited journalists, recognizing the critical role media plays in the electoral process.


For journalists facing threats or attacks, IPC says it has designated safety alert officers to report incidents via calls or messages:

Journalists are also encouraged to report any threats to the Edo State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.


The IPC's call to action is crucial, considering the history of journalist attacks during elections in Nigeria. By prioritizing safety and professionalism, journalists can effectively discharge their duties and contribute to a credible electoral process.

BREAKING: 2Baba Shot Dead In Rivers State

A notorious cult leader and the prime suspect in the brutal murder of the late Divisional Police Officer, SP Bako Angbashim, in the state, Gift Okpara, popularly referred to as 2Baba, has been reportedly killed in a police-led major security raid. The police and other security agencies were said to have conducted land and aerial raids at the identical hideout of the Iceland cult leader and his gang at Idu-Ekpeye in Ahoada East local government area of Rivers on Saturday, February 17. According to  The Nation , the Iceland cult leader was reportedly feared dead after the operation.   Recall that in September 2023, the late DPO was ambushed and captured by the cult group led by 2Baba in the Odiemudie community, Ahoada East LGA.   2Baba and his gang then took the DPO to the forest, where they killed him and dismembered his body. The cultists then filmed him. Another source, Obi, said he saw no less than 15 vehicles and an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) during the operation.

After the mass, the reception which was at Munic Classic Hotel where all dignitaries were entertained, Amb Charles Nwonye stayed briefly and left to visit and consult with the Umuada Anaedo Forum women at Obi Okpunoegbu to present his political ambition to the women.
