Anambra: No Court Stopped Eziowelle Improvement Union Election From Holding 29th June -- Electoral Committee

... as government approves conduct of EIU election

BY RAYMOND OZOJI, Awka

The electoral committee responsible for the conduct of Eziowelle Improvement Union Election in Idemili-North Local Government Area of Anambra State has debunked rumours making the rounds that a court injunction has stopped Eziowelle Improvement Union Election from holding Saturday the 29th day of June, 2024.

Chairman of the electoral committee constituted by the Anambra State Government, Dr. Laz Okafor told this journalist that such information were blatant lies from the pit of hell as no court in the country issued such fictitious cum frivolous injunction being peddled by those he described as enemies of peace in Eziowelle community.

Okafor who spoke exclusively with journalist Raymond Ozoji on Friday, said that the position of the court is that Eziowelle Improvement Union Election should hold as scheduled devoid of confusion and rancour while status quo remained.
He said truly some dramatis personae in Eziowelle approached the court to stop the EIU election but the court, according to him, did not grant them any relief instead it ruled that the election must be held on the stipulated date.

The EIU electoral committee chairman therefore maintained that as far as Eziowelle community and Anambra State Government are concerned, Eziowelle town union election must hold on Saturday the 29th day of June, 2024.

Okafor said all the contestants were ready for the election and Eziowelle people were enthusiastic about the said election, adding that all necessary arrangements have been made for the EIU election to be held seamlessly.

Okafor also disclosed that the Anambra State Government through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs have notified all the security agencies in the state about the EIU election through letters he personally delivered to their offices across the state to ensure hitch-free elections.

Meanwhile national president of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) and out-going President-General of Eziowelle Improvement Union (EIU) Barr. Titus Nnabuike Akpudo, again corroborated what Dr. Laz Okafor posited, saying categorically that no court anywhere ruled that Eziowelle Improvement Union election will not be held on 29th June, 2024.

Akpudo who also spoke exclusively with this journalist disclosed that some dissident elements in the community filed a suit against him that he should stop parading himself as the President-General of Eziowelle Improvement Union but the court, according to him, did not grant such request instead it ruled that the status quo should prevail, which implied that the court insisted he should continue as President-General of Eziowelle community.

Akpudo maintained that the news of court stopping EIU election from taking place on 29th June, 2024 was false and solely intended to deceive the people with the aim of creating chaos and crisis in the community.

He said Eziowelle community and Anambra State Government were not parties to the lawsuit the dissidents filed against him and as a result, they lacked the locus standi to stop EIU election from holding as scheduled.

He equally pointed out that the state government has given its approval and support for the conduct of Eziowelle Improvement Union election on 29th June, 2024, stressing that the date for the EIU election is sacrosanct and no malignant forces can change it !
