Nwajiuba, attends National Youth Congress Lecture, speaks on Nigerian Democratic System and Good Governance, the Journey so far.

The Honorable Minister of State for Education,  Hon Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba yesterday was the guest speaker at the National Youth Congress Lecture with the theme: Nigerian Democratic System and Good Governance; the Journey so Far.

In his keynote address at the lecture, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba stated that the theme was not only current, but is also thought provoking. He said as we all live in a Political environment, that is both a product of our social and economic realities, it is has however become expideint to discuss democractic tendencies of our country, Nigeria.

Hon. Nwajiuba went down memory lane to recount the journey so far, starting from 1999. He commended many constitutional scholars like Prof Ben Nwabueze, and activists like Baba Akande who without the military birtherd the 1979 constitution. He said their recommendations was wholesome in the adoption of the 1979 constitution with minor amendment to number of states and local governments.

He said " this democractic governance has grown in leaps and bounds. Yet those who feel economically and socio -culturally dissatisfied, opt for a chance to say governance has failed. Many of our citizens are investing a lot of time arguing over structure and restructuring. Powers devolving or evolving. True and false federations, who wrote or who did not write the constitution.

He stressed that restructuring which has become a recurring decimal in the nations Political space refer to altering the structure and in this case the structure of Nigeria.

He highlighted some of the structures in Goverment to include, governance structure in the country which has adopted the Presidental style of leadership, made up of executive, bi Carmel legislature, layered Judiciary, replicated equally in all states. Security structures, a central federal army, police, immigration, customs, civil defence, fire service, park rangers, state Security and national intelligence. Geographic or physical structure of cluster states, using natural boundaries, rivers forests and tribal language distinction, Revenue, internal generated revenue, which is 100% at source.

He went further to state that the discontent with the socioeconomic polity is often manifest as Political disquiet which is common in capitalist economies with huge gaps between the haves and have nots with a visible shrinking middle class. He went on to state that " all parts of the country are unhappy about their economic condition only confirms that none is getting enough of what they desire." He therefore stated that in this case, a robust life style that allows the good things if life, as so many have become exposed to, buy unable to create or provide any, except from procuring it from the western world, china or elsewhere has truly become the problem of many Nigerians.

He stressed that managing the expectations and aspirations of the people against the avaliable resources avaliable in the face of the world economic system is the challenge that will always be present with Nigerians unless we apply our wits over our tribal differences, which has trivialized our developmental difficulties and focus.

He said that President Muhammad Buhari has done a very good job of using extremely limited resources to course correct a sliding nation in just 6 years and is poised to tie up few nuts and bolts in the remaining 23 months of his tenure. Nwajiuba said that the President has shown that he has the character, which is incorruptible and the competence and capacity for good Governance, which is shown in his 3 goals of Security, economy and curbing corruption, which are pointers to address the constitutionally stated objectives of the country.

The National Youth Congress Lecture gave the minister the opportunity to go down memory lane on the need for the youths to embrace Democracy, which is still the only available option for a united Nigeria. In attendance was Hon James Faleke and Hon Fadan, former National Treasurer of the All Progressives Congress.
