Worsening Erosion Menace In ANAMBRA Worrisome -AZUBOGU

- Says Anambra's over 250 erosion sites not tourist sites but threats that must be defeated

Leading Governorship aspirant on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Engr. Chris Emeka Azubogu has expressed deep concern over worsening erosion menace across the state.

Azubogu spoke at Umunnowu village, Agulu in Anaocha LGA of the state where he had gone to condole with Chief Jude Onyeanwuna Ezeani, the Anaocha LG Chapter Chairman of PDP and the entire Ezeani family, over the death of their beloved mother, Ezinne Felicia Ezeani (Atala) who was laid to rest yesterday.

In his exact words, “the spate of erosion menace threatening the Anambra landscape is worrisome; we over 250 erosion sites across the state and they should not be viewed as tourist sites but threats that must be defeated.”

The frontline PDP governorship hopeful regretted that land spaces that should be deployed for commercial, industrial, agricultural and residential use are either already eroded or threatened by erosion.

According to him, "it is worrisome that, with land space of 4,865 square kilometers, while Anambra’s population is significantly growing, erosion menace is also growing and taking a chunk of limited land. We cannot resign to fate or view these erosion sites as tourist destinations where people only go for site seeing and take pictures…

“As a Governor of Anambra State, by God's grace, we will deploy effective land reclamation mechanisms to substantially recover eroded land spaces. We will also evolve and implement regulations that will prevent public behaviours that have negative consequences on our environment."

Concluding, Azubogu stressed that the first line of defense against erosion menace in Anambra is for people and community leaders to take necessary and outlined preventive measures serious.

"Our people and community leaders must lead the 'war' targeted at preventing fresh erosion menaces. Anambra State government should also take seriously the issue of environmental impact assessment before every construction activity is commenced in the State, bearing in mind that we have to protect our land from erosion" – Azubogu, who urged the Ezeani family to be consoled by the exemplary life their departed mother lived, concluded.
