Covid19: Anambra testing centres in the pipeline- Prof Anthony Igwegbe.


The Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital NAUTH, Nnewi has hinted of measures been put in place for NCDC to approve  a standard testing centre in Anambra state, with the option of Awka and Nnewi  viewed as the possible centres.

He made this disclosure earlier this week while interacting with newsmen in his office. He stated that the state government, led by Chief Willie Obiano has shown genuine desire to stop the virus from spreading, through the proactive measures put in place to help cut the virus off. He said that the testing centre which is expected must have a biosafety level of at least grade 3, as specified by NCDC.

He was happy to note that, the NCDC standard of testing is higher than that of other countries, because the test goes through a rigorous process, which ensures 100% accuracy all the time. He hinted that, NCDC last two weeks visited the Governor of Anambra state, to talk about the modalities of having a testing centre at Chukwumeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital  (COOUTH) and Konanylsis in Nnewi. He said that when all the necessary modalities are put in place, NCDC will examine and approve these centres as testing centres for corona virus in the state, meanwhile,samples drom Anambra are taken to Irua Specialist Hospital in Edo state, which is closest to the state.

Prof Igwegbe, further stressed, that the only way to curtail the spread of coronavirus is through the washing of hands with running water and soap for at least 20 seconds, using of hand sanitizers, wearing of face masks, and isolation. He commended the state Governor for been a proactive member of the committee and for his support towards curtailing the spread of the corona virus in Anambra state.
